Under Mr Chan’s tutelage, not only have I learnt the material required to succeed in the exams for Chemistry and Biology, but also understood many of the reasoning behind the things I was taught, and was taught a more holistic approach to answering problems in exams.

Studying with Mr Chan was a combination of exam question based drilling, and exploratory questioning. He understood and promoted exam oriented learning, with access to a plethora of past papers, as that is probably the most efficient method of obtaining high grades in exams, but he also knew much more than the minimum required for the IB exam. As a researcher in the field, he had hands on experience the science behind the textbooks, particularly Biology and Chemistry, the two subjects I took, and could answer pretty much my every question related to the science.

I achieved 7s in both Chemistry and Biology HL in the International Baccalaureate. I achieve 790 in SAT II Chemistry and 800 in SAT II Physics.

I am writing to personally recommend Mr. Chan as an academic tutor, who had been constantly helping me with my Tasmanian Certificate of Education and getting my Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). I was fortunate enough to know Mr. Chan when I was in Year 10, in 2012 and since then, there had been an enormous improvement in my grades in both Chemistry and Biology.

I would like to make a special mention on Mr. Chan’s preparation on the IB database, past exam questions and lecture notes. Mr. Chan separated the questions into different topics which were particularly helpful in enhancing my understanding of the course content and as a follow-up of the tutorial. Mr. Chan’s notes helped me get through the final preparation of the external exam which allows me to go over all the details in a much more time-saving way. Although I am not doing the IB program, studying my course with the IB questions provided by Mr. Chan lead met to every success in my final grades.

I am deeply grateful to know Mr. Chan, who is a professional, affectionate, and inspirational tutor, at the time I really struggled with my course. Without the support and encouragement of Mr. Chan, I would not be able to squeeze into the top 0.6% of the 2014 Australian Cohan. I was recommend Mr. Chan to every IB and DSE candidate as an academic tutor, who can help students to work towards zenith.

Mr. Chan started tuition with me from September 2010 to May 2012. He taught Biology but sometimes also offers Mathematics tuition to me. I am writing to recommend him not only for his acknowledge and talent in biochemistry field but also thank him for helping me to understand complicate science concepts better.

Moving on from the IB Middle Years program to the IB diploma program, the syllabus has become much more complicated. Mr. Chan knows the IB Diploma Sciences Curriculum very well. For instance, in IB Diploma Sciences, there are many Internal Assessments. Mr. Chan truly has an insight in the assessment rubric. He knows how to tackle each area in the rubric and give out suggestions for me to earn more points for the assessments. Having a well written Internal Assessment Lab Report is vital in IB. The suggestions that Mr. Chan had given made me understand the techniques saved me from wasting time to write things that would not boost my grade.

Mr. Chan is a patient and caring tutor whom will explain new topics learnt in class again. This helped me to build a strong foundation of Biology during these 2 years. As the notes or textbooks often come with more text than pictures, it is very hard for me to absorb the concepts. Mr. Chan drew clear diagrams of different Biology process while he explains. His hand drawn diagrams are neat so I can always easily revise and am able to understand the ideas quickly.

Overall, it had been a pleasure for me to be a student of Mr. Chan. He had successfully led my grade from a low 3 to 5 out of 7 in Biology.
