TOEFL

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) was established in 1962 and is now a trademark of the Educational Testing Service, a non-profit organisation that designs and administers the test. Statistically, it is the world’s most common entrance requirement for college or university. It a standardised, international test of English language ability for non-native speakers or English and is aimed at those wishing to enrol in a US university. While this is the most common use of the test, it can also be used for English-learning program admissions, scholarships and certifications, for English learners who wish to track their progress, and for students who need to apply for a visa. It is one of the two major global tests of English language ability, the other being the IELTS. Scores are valid for two years, after which they are no long reported. The test comes in two formats, the Paper-Based test and, since 2005, the Internet-Based Test. While candidates can sit either test, Brighten tutors recommend you train specifically for the type of test you plan to take, as the time limit, content and structure of each varies significantly.

So far, over 27 millions students have taken the TOEFL. The test covers the four key skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, grading each sub-skill independently in order to produce an overall score. It is convenient as the entire test is take in a single day and more appropriate to studying in higher education as it measures only academic language skills that will be utilised in a classroom environment. Each section is scored between 0 and 30, so the overall test score runs from 0 to 120. Different institutions usually demand different TOEFL scores for different courses and purposes.
