Mr Chan first started tutoring me IB Higher Level Chemistry and Biology in the November of 2012. As an expert in Biochemistry, Mr. Chan is more than capable to be a great tutor in science subjects. He can explain abstract concept simply using examples and graphs. I admit that I am not a smart person in studying sciences, yet under the great pressure of the upcoming examination, I was forced to work harder in biology and chemistry. Mr. Chan is the tutor that helped me to improve.
Different from other tutors, Mr. Chan is encouraging rather than being pushy. Tutorial is never something very interesting. Yet he managed to add in some knowledge he earned from his research program and books to the lesson, making boring facts fascinating. He always teach me the reason behind the theories and facts, which made me understand more about the text and made them easier to be remembered.
Mr. Chan is a well-prepared person. He will catch up with the new syllabus of the IB curriculum, hoping to be very familiar with it and make benefits to his students. Since he understands the requirement thoroughly, the guidelines he made were very clear. This helped me work in a more efficient way. The schedule of the IBDP program is very tight. Saving time in working on the internal assessment and lab reports really made a big difference.
Mr Chan gave me an access to a wide collection of IB past paper. He will pick out the questions from the great pile of past papers that were challenging and related to topics that I am not familiar with. To find a suitable and challenging question will definitely use up a lot of time for us students, just like finding a needle in a haystack. Yet for an experienced, passionate and well-organized tutor like him, it was just a piece of cake. Whenever I meet a challenging question, he is always willing to solve it, even though it was not in lesson time.
Throughout the two years of hard work there was an improvement in my biology and chemistry. I attained a grade 6 in both Higher Level Chemistry and Higher Level Biology and a total of 40 marks in my IBDP examination. I received offers from The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, etc.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Mr Chan as your academic tutor for his teaching passion and knowledge in Biochemistry field. I was fortunate to have him as my tutor.

As a student studying for the HKDSEs, Mr Chan’s exam-oriented approach to my study in Biology and Chemistry has kept me on track while I was lost to how to conduct revision for the HKDSE examinations of the two subjects mentioned. His training revolves around exam papers drilling sessions, highlights on the main points in the numerous amount of information we are required to study and also regular evaluation on students’ understanding of the topics learnt and concepts introduced. I believe his excellence in this form of teaching is a result from many experiences as a tutor to Hong Kong students.
The new HKDSE curriculum has included School-based assessment known as SBAs in which students have to complete lab reports and carry out practical experiments as part of the test. With Master degrees in Biochemistry and having experienced research work in a laboratory, Mr Chan has more than sufficient knowledge in aiding me not only during written exams but also practical tests.
Having been through secondary school years in Hong Kong, Mr Chan is very familiar with the examination system. Mr Chan is also most comfortable answering any questions about past HKCEE and HKALE papers which I find most helpful when I was struggling to study for the public exams. With numerous students from the IB programme and candidates of the GCEs, Mr Chan provides a wide data base of knowledge and questions which have contributed to training me to think in more perspectives and to be open to different types of questions.
Mr Chan not only helps with examinations of the subjects but through showing me video clips and different materials from books, had kept me motivated in the pursue of new knowledge in Chemistry and Biology, such as the way bees’ genetic materials were passed onto their offsprings. I have found that studying for these 2 subjects had not been an ordeal but had become my interest thanks to Mr Chan’s inspiration.
There is a famous saying about teachers: “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” My 2 years of tuition experience with Mr Chan had been a blessing to me. I have been competitive in these 2 subjects due to Mr Chan’s skillful teaching, but most importantly, Mr Chan had been a tutor who has given me motivation in studying. I definitely recommend Mr Chi-Lung Chan as a tutor.

Mr. Chan has been my Chemistry and Biology tutor for 2014 HKDSE. In two years, my academic results in Chemistry and Biology improved greatly, leaping from the middle of my class to top five of the whole grade. Therefore, the great improvement in both Chemistry and Biology proves that Mr. Chan is a tutor who is good at the public examination.
Apart from having a comprehensive collection of past papers, in both HKCEE and HKALE, Mr. Chan is specialized in teaching and analyzing the mark allocation of each type of question. Such exam-oriented drilling makes me feel more confident in overcoming HKDSE. In light of the exam drilling, he exhibited every single step patiently and explained every concept precisely and concisely. With thorough understanding towards different topics, I am able to solve questions that require complicated and logical concepts. In short, his teaching mode is theoretical and practical.
In addition, Mr. Chan is not only cultivating knowledge but he is also relieving my unrelenting stress by having discussions about the university’s life. Aiming at studying Medicine in the university, I sometimes have pushed myself too much. Yet, Mr. Chan keeps reminding me that studying Medicine should not be the only aim and career path of my future by discussing and introducing other faculties, such as Biochemistry. Being encouraged, I am more confident and optimistic about my future.
Throughout these two years, Mr. Chan has been well-prepared, patient and devoted to his tutorial. Therefore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to him and recommend his as a tutor.
